Speer's Early life 1905-1930
· Berthold Konrad Hermann Albert Speer was born in March 1905 in Mannheim Germany into a wealthy German family. His father was a successful architect
· He grew up with considerable privilege and because of this the family survived World War One better then most albeit the considerable food shortages
· In 1923 Speer began studies of Architecture in the Institute of Technology in Karlsruhe and qualified to as an Architect in 1927
· In 1927 Speer married Margarete Weber and began work under the tutelage of Professor Heinrich Tessenow

Introduction to Nazism 1930-1931
· During the Great Depression many students at the Berlin Institute of Technology where Speer was employed supported the Nazi movement including his mentor Professor Tessenow who sympathized with Nazi ideals
· In December 1930 Speer attended a Nazi meeting along with others from the University of Berlin which gave him the opportunity to hear Hitler speak about restoring national honor and other Nazi ideals
· He was so moved by what he heard that in March 1931 he joined the party.
